Chargers Acquire Defender; Trade Brian Robison
San Diego, December 21st, 2017: The San Diego Chargers acquired defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches from the Carolina Panthers today in exchange for veteran defensive lineman Brian Robison.
"As much as we hated to part with Brian," Head Coach Hank Sienzant said in announcing the trade, "getting a player the quality of Nunez-Roches was too good an opportunity to pass up.
"Brian will be an asset to the Panthers, I'm sure," Sienzant said, "as much as he's been an asset to us. But for Nunez-Roches, we wouldn't be making this deal. We see a lot of Brian Robison in him, and we hope he will continue to develop into the type of player Brian was.
"We're elated we could make this deal happen, and I'm certain Carolina is as happy with their acquisition of Brian Robison as we are with Rakeem Nunez-Roches," Sienzant said.
The other part of the deal that helped convince the Chargers to make the deal is Nunez-Roches is more than ten years younger than Robison, and his whole future is ahead of him. It's no secret that the Chargers are top-heavy with players 30 and over. The acquisition of Nunez-Roches from Carolina, and the acquisition of A.J.Cann, along with a 2018 fourth round rookie pick from Indianapolis earlier today - for Robison, 33, and Bethea, 32, marks a clear departure from the philosophy of the prior regime.
Old is out, young is in.
Doug Crandall of Carolina to confirm.
Thanks, Doug!
